Real Exchange Rates and Time-Varying Trade Costs
In a recent paper Jacks et al. (2008) advocate a micro-founded measure for bilateral trade costs. We employ this measure and extend two nonlinear models for the real exchange rate so as to re-examine the Purchasing Power Parity hypothesis in the presence of time-varying trade costs. Using data for the dollar-sterling real exchange rate from 1830 to 2005, we provide significant evidence in favor...
متن کاملReal Effective Exchange Rate and Trade Performance in Iran
The Purpose of this paper is to investigate the long-run effect of real effective exchange rate on Iran non-oil trade balance. The methodology is based on ARDL procedure that can be applied irrespective of whether the regressors are I(0) or I(1). The results show the real depreciation has not a favorable long - run effect on the non-oil trade balance of Iran from 1979 to 2001.
متن کاملBilateral Exchange Rates and Jobs ∗ Eddy
We study the labor market effects of realignment in fixed bilateral exchange rates, such as China’s peg to the US dollar. We employ the open economy model developed by de Melo and Robinson to identify the core parameters of the real, trade side of the economy driving the unemployment effects of bilateral exchange rate realignment. A small open economy version of the model is explored analytical...
متن کاملInequality and Real Exchange Rates
Kocherlakota and Pistaferri (2007) describe two different models (Private Information Pareto Optimal and Incomplete Markets) of how households partially insure themselves against idiosyncratic shocks. They demonstrate that the models differ in terms of their implications for real exchange rates. In this paper, we use data from a wide range of countries, and document that there is a statististic...
متن کاملPersistent Real Exchange Rates
Three features of the international exchange rate data that are widely known are: (a) a high correlation between bilateral nominal and real exchange rates; (b) real exchange rate movements are highly persistent; and (c) real exchange rates are highly volatile. This paper attempts a joint, albeit partial, rationalization of these facts in an environment with no staggered contracts and where pric...
